Teacher education bursary

There are various sources of funding and support available for trainee teachers while they complete their programme of study. Funding can include loans for tuition fees and living costs for full-time students and tuition fee and course grants for part-time study and training bursaries of up to £20,000 per year.

Bursary rates for PGCE Primary and Secondary programmes 2012-13

In 2011 the Government consulted on a new ITT strategy, which proposed a new system of financial incentives for student teachers.

Bursaries are now available for student teachers on eligible postgraduate courses in England. Bursary amounts will vary depending on teaching subject and degree class.

The table below summarises the standard training bursaries available in 2012-13.

Degree class Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry Biology, Design and Technology, ICT, Music, Physical Education, Primary
1st £20,000 £9,000
2:1 £15,000 £5,000
2:2 £12,000 -

Full time PGCE/PCE LLS programmes 2012-13

The bursaries for students undertaking a full-time PGCE/PCE LLS programme are still to be confirmed.
