Physical Education and Sport, BA Hons

We offer a unique interactive degree that will allow you to pursue your sporting passion.

The BA Hons PE and Sport degree includes practical courses in athletics, dance, games, gymnastics and swimming, as well as outdoor activities, which will allow you to flourish in your chosen specialism. The degree also provides theoretical courses related to the scientific, psychological and sociological study of physical education and sport

In addition, you will study courses related to sport policy, practice and development which consider the context and principles of teaching and coaching. There is also the opportunity to examine contemporary PE and sporting issues and their impact within local, national and international communities. Research skills are developed in each year leading to the supervised Independent Study course in the final year.

The university has excellent sports facilities including an indoor Airdome (astroturf), sports hall, and a specialist dance studio.

With the  opportunity to complete sport-related work placements, we can help you develop the skills and experience to start your dream career.

The aims of the programme are to:

  • Provide an education in the disciplines integral to physical education and sport
  • Enhance knowledge and understanding of physical education and sport
  • Develop key transferable skills such as information technology (IT), team work, problem solving, self-assessment, and application of research and mathematical skills.
  • Develop an enquiring and analytical approach to the study of physical education and sport.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have:

  • 260 UCAS points
  • PLUS at least three GCSEs at grade C or above including English language.

Assessment

Students are assessed through examinations, essays, reports, portfolio tasks, presentations, video analysis, oral examinations and practical assessments.

Career options

Dedicated courses in Year 1 and Year 3 prepare students to enhance their employability for PE and sport-related careers and work placement opportunities are built into each year of the programme. Graduates are equipped to work in a variety of roles within PE and Sport such as teaching (via a PGCE programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status), coaching, sport development and sports promotion.
