This programme introduces students to the creative, critical and technological skills that comprise contemporary modes of writing for the media. Students have the opportunity to study courses in screen, performance and digital forms of writing over three years, as well as choosing options in journalism, drama, film or fiction writing.

The programme encourages students to develop their own voice through the process of writing, as well as by working collaboratively and on individual projects, briefs and logbooks. There are opportunities to undertake an industrial placement and produce a major project and portfolio of writing.

  • To develop skills in writing for the media
  • To introduce students to various specialist pathways such as digital forms of writing, screen writing and journalism
  • To equip students with creative and critical knowledge.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have:

200 UCAS points

INCLUDING at least 120 points from two A-levels or from a relevant vocational qualification

PLUS GCSE English at grade C or above.

Assessment

Students are assessed through portfolios, logbooks, essays, critical reviews, features, group and individual presentations.

Career options

Graduates have opportunities in a wide range of professions requiring media writing: screen writing (TV, film), performance writing, journalism, the theatre, live arts, alternative publishing, advertising, digital content production, arts, education or local government. Graduates may also go on to postgraduate study.

  • Two options from a range including: Writing for the Stage and Screen; Writing Poetry and Prose; Introduction to Film Making; Reel to Virtual: Representation in the Digital Age; Headlines in History; Issues in Representation

  • Two options from: Journalism and DTP; Video Production; Writing for the Stage; Writing Poetry; Global Cinema, National Identities

Year 3

  • Performing / Writing
  • Screen / Writing
  • Two options from: Media Writing Project; Media Writing Placement; Advanced Print Journalism; Alternative Publishing; Advanced Theatre Practice: Drama Project; Contemporary British Theatre; Creative Entrepreneurship; Film, Fantasy and Identity; The New Media Environment
