Public Relations and Communications, BA Hons

Studying public relations (PR) in London is ideal because London is at the heart of the global PR and communications industry. Senior practitioners from listed companies, leading global and national PR consultancies, charities and public sector organisations, deliver guest lectures on the degree. These include PR experts from Marks & Spencer, leading PR consultancies, the Media Trust and the police. In addition, there are field trips to high profile, London-based organisations from the heart of government to Tottenham Hotspur FC.

The degree prepares students for their early careers in PR and communications, with excellent employment rates. It aims to develop students into confident, knowledgeable and skilled communicators. Recent graduates from our degree have secured jobs in organisations like Bell-Pottinger Corporate and Brand, Gucci, FTI Consulting and Webber Shandwick.

The programme helps students to develop a range of communication skills, and there is a strong emphasis on social media and media relations. Students are based in Greenwich Business School and are taught how PR strategically fits with organisational strategy and marketing. They are encouraged to reflect on professionalism and ethics. Importantly, the programme gives students the opportunity to explore different PR specialisations - from financial to fashion PR, and from corporate PR to charity PR. In the third year, students focus on areas of particular interest to them through their dissertation topics and specialist options. The European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA) prize for the best BA PR dissertation in Europe was recently awarded to one of our students.

The programme has a strong vocational focus with students participating in work experience. Organisations where students have had work experience include: Accessorize, All-Leo, Amazon PR, Bell-Pottinger Corporate and Brand, Bright One, Burton, Carat, Clifford French, Four Communications, Freud Communications, FTI Consulting, Ketchum Pleon, MacMillan Cancer Support, MEC, Sotheby's and Twestival.

"I have Greenwich to thank for the boost in my self-confidence and presentation skills, both through the course and university employment. The course also allowed me to develop knowledge of how the media and social media works for PR; a skill that many companies look for in new PR recruits. Finally, the degree at Greenwich gave me contacts in the industry - many of which would have been difficult to obtain independently."
