This programme offers a multidisciplinary approach to International Studies and responds to evolving notions of our global environment providing students with the tools needed to understand and question the changes and challenges of global issues in the 21st century. Students have the opportunity to specialise in one of two pathways: Language and Culture or International Studies.

The flexibility of the degree structure enables students to follow their interests and deepen specialist knowledge by exploring cultural and political dynamics that influence our global world. It helps students to acquire invaluable transferable skills, such as communicating across cultures, using sources, evaluating evidence and problem solving, while situating the concept of the language being studied in an intercultural context.

Modern foreign languages play a particular role within the programme and are seen primarily as a tool to further students’ knowledge and understanding of cultural, political and social differences in an international context. Students can select up to two modern foreign languages in their first year and follow this throughout their degree. Languages are taken at one of three levels (beginners’, post-GCSE or post-A level). A language option is not compulsory within the International Studies pathway but it is strongly recommended for the work-placement in the final year of study. There is the possibility to go on an ERASMUS exchange in the second year of study.
