It is difficult to imagine the modern world without the all-pervasive impact of electrical and electronic engineering. All modern communication systems, from simple direct dial connections to global mobile phone networks and even interstellar radio signals are all based on the fundamental principles you will learn on this degree programme. Likewise, control and instrumentation techniques are essential aspects of modern technology, and smart grids, micro-power generation and sustainability, are very important features of any electrical or electronic engineer's work. This programme will introduce you to all aspects, from the fundamental properties of electromagnetic waves to the design of advanced communication networks. The specialist and integrated engineering laboratories enable you to work with many industry-standard systems and technologies, and preparing you for many career opportunities in this exciting and ever expanding field.

This MEng degree programme is 4 years in full-time mode and meets the educational requirements for registration as an chartered engineer (CEng) with the relevant engineering institution. The aims of the programme are:

  • To provide you with the knowledge and skills relevant to a career as a professional engineer who can work effectively with current and future electrical and electronic engineering design, development and implementation methods
  • To support you in understanding the innovative and pioneering approaches in this field and to be able to apply them to the solution of real-world problems to develop new products and technologies
  • To help you acquire the knowledge and skills required to perform a variety of graduate level professional roles within electrical, electronic, control and communications engineering, including management roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have:

EITHER 340 UCAS points

FROM 2 or 3 A levels with an additional AS level (of which 80 points from A2 mathematics or a physical science / numerate subject) OR BTEC/EdExcel ED at DDM including Distinction in Unit 4 and Unit 28 OR equivalent qualifications.

PLUS at least three GCSEs at grade C or above (including English, mathematics and a science) or equivalent.

* Where appropriate you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) or an equivalent rating in another Secure English Language Test.

* For advanced entry to Year 2 or 3 full-time or the equivalent part-time years, you will need an appropriate level 4 or 5 qualification, for example an HNC, HND or foundation degree or equivalent that maps to this degree. For further information please contact the Enquiry Unit on 020 8331 9000.

Assessment

Project-based tasks, laboratory experiments, formative and summative assignments, and formal examinations.
