Sports Science with Coaching, Foundation Degree (Medway)

This programme is intended for people who currently work, or wish to work, in the coaching profession. Approximately a quarter of the content is specifically focused on coaching.

The programme is intended to provide a strong background in the current disciplines of sport science. It is also intended to enable students to qualify in various sports coaching qualifications, and to be able to analyse and evaluate sporting performance in a variety of settings.

The intention is to enable students to acquire the necessary specific skills and competencies to be able to operate effectively in a range of sports, applying the science into active coaching scenarios through work-based learning.

Aims of the programme

This programme will enable you to:

  • Work towards your qualifications as a coach
  • Develop your analytical skills in terms of performance
  • Apply your theoretical knowledge in a work-related setting

Two years full time (approx 3 days a week)

Three years part time (1 day per week; days alter with year of study)

Entry requirements

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a strong interest in, and aptitude towards, working in the sports sector. 

It is an expectation that all students will undergo (or have recently undergone) appropriate checks as to their suitability to work with, or in an environment in which, children and young people are educated or trained or have access.

Applicants will normally be interviewed and professional and character references will always be taken up prior to any offer of a place.

Assessment

Assignments, reports, presentations and examinations.

Career options

Career opportunities exist in coaching through local councils, school sport partnerships, sports development units, coaching consultancy companies and self-employment. 

Students also enter teaching, although this will generally require a further qualification. Many students go on to postgraduate study in specialised areas of sports science.
