Getting started on Applied Professional Studies

Applied Professional Studies at the University of Greenwich is a year-round programme. If you are taking courses that are taught as part of other university programmes, you will need to start them in September. But otherwise you can start at any time.

‘Tool Kit’ introductory course

All new Applied Professional Studies students can attend an eight-week ‘Tool Kit’ introductory course. These are held at study centres across south-east London, Kent and Medway and cover the Foundations for Learning and Learning to Progress courses. They also introduce you to work-based learning projects and learning achieved through work.

Attending the introductory course is optional, but most new students choose to take the ‘Tool Kit’. If you prefer not to attend, you can begin your Applied Professional Studies programme as soon as you have been allocated a tutor.

Compulsory elements

Applied Professional Studies is a highly-flexible programme and no two students follow the same package of learning. However, there are some compulsory elements of the programme.

  • At least some of your credit must be obtained by work-based learning.
  • At Levels 1 and 2, you must complete a 15-credit course entitled Learning Contract, in which you reflect on your past, plan for your future and lay out how you intend to complete your Applied Professional Studies programme.
  • Students undertaking a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or an MA/MSc in Applied Professional Studies must also complete a learning contract course entitled Learning Agreement.
