Students with disabilities

You asked: Does the university cater for students with disabilities?

Our answer:

Students with disabilities

The university welcomes applications from disabled people and is committed to enabling disabled students to succeed. Central to our philosophy is the understanding that all disabled people have individual needs and issues.

The university’s Disability & Dyslexia Centre can provide assistance at any stage in your application process and at any point in your studies. We provide information and support for disabled and dyslexic students across the university and can advise on information technology in relation to disability. Advice and guidance is based on your individual requirements, and includes support for students with mental health needs and long-term medical conditions. The university also offers in-house assessments of need for the Disabled Student Allowances through the Outreach Assessment Centre (in partnership with Kent Assessors). For further information please telephone 0208 331 7875.

We can support you in arranging appropriate equipment and access to teaching and learning. We will make recommendations on appropriate arrangements for assessment and examinations, and assist in putting these into action. It is essential that this one-to-one advice takes place before you begin your studies at the university.

The university residences include accommodation adapted for people with special needs, and we may be able to make further adaptations to suit particular requirements. Information about campus accessibility is available on request. We encourage disabled applicants to visit before making an application to decide if we are able to meet your access needs. If you have difficulties with mobility (particularly if you require wheelchair access) or are registered blind or have severe or profound hearing loss, you are strongly advised to make contact with the Disability & Dyslexia Centre as soon as possible after submitting your UCAS form. Unfortunately, we may not be able to make arrangements for specialist support if you delay.

The university’s disability policy statement sets out our commitment to disabled students and provides information about access on the various campuses.
