Pre-Sessional English courses

The English language entry requirement for most of our programmes is IELTS 6.0 or an equivalent rating in another recognised language testing system. For some programmes, our minimum IELTS requirement is 6.5. Depending on your IELTS score, you may need to follow one of our Pre-Sessional English courses. This will help you further improve your academic English and bring you up to a score of 6.0 or 6.5 depending on the pathway you choose.

As part of the Pre-Sessional English course students explore a range of contemporary issues and have the opportunity to develop their language skills in an academic context.  Students are also able to practice academic tasks in an authentic, supportive environment with use of the extensive university facilities.

Course content

The course covers a variety of topics:
  • Presentation skills: organising and structuring a presentation; using visuals and vocabulary
  • Seminar skills: presenting, developing and supporting an argument; taking your turn
  • Academic encounters: reading and writing summaries; vocabulary; discussion
  • Academic writing (paraphrasing, coherence, etc.); grammar
  • Listening: note taking; understanding organisation
  • Project work: using the library; extended reading
  • The media and current affairs.

During the course, you will carry out a number of tasks in class time as well as producing a portfolio of your work.

Attendance

All five-week and nine-week courses are 4 hours per day and a total of 20 hours per week (comprising 15 taught hours and 5 hours of personal study in the Language Centre). The two-week course follows a similar pattern.
