International Foundation Programme

If you do not immediately fulfill the entry requirements for a three-year degree programme, you can apply for alternatives such as the International Foundation Programme(IFP).

You can apply for this programme if you have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 4.5 or above, with a minimum of 4.0 in each component or equivalent. You will take classes:

  • To achieve a IELTS of 6.0, as well as studying academic subjects, or
  • If you already have an IELTS of 6.0, you can study academic subjects to prepare for our degree programmes.

Improve your level of English

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) includes a range of courses that can help you to improve your general level of English and develop your academic study skills; in particular, writing, reading, note-taking, group work and presenting.

The programme is taught by qualified and experienced teachers, using a variety of methods and materials. Regular tutorials are held on a one-to-one and small group basis with personal tutors. In addition to this, students are able to benefit from extra practice with the English Language Assistant.

You also study a range of subjects that will provide you with a suitable grounding for pursuing further studies at undergraduate degree level.

Core courses:

  • English for Academic Purposes 1
  • Business Communication
  • Computer Fundamentals 1
  • Contextual Studies for International Students
  • English for Academic Purposes 3
  • Context and Culture
  • Business Numeracy

In addition, each student should select one of these optional courses:

  • Organisations and Management
  • Computer Fundamentals 2
  • Principles of Marketing
  • English for Academic Purposes 2
  • English for Academic Purposes 4

Assessment

The courses are assessed by a mix of assessed coursework, class presentations and examinations.

On completion of the IFP you should:

  • Be able to communicate in English to a standard of 6.0 or above on the IELTS scale
  • Be in a position to progress to a degree programme, either at the University of Greenwich, or another tertiary education institution in the UK.

Resources

In addition to classroom study, the following resources will be there to help you:

  • Language laboratories
  • The university’s language centre and libraries where you have access to language learning videos, cassettes and a wide range of grammar resources
  • Extra language practice with the English Language Assistant
  • Computing facilities to improve your language skills.

More programmes to choose from

If you have an IELTS score of 6.0 you could consider taking one of our extended degree programmes. These include: combined honours; computer systems with software engineering, or computer networking; mechanical, manufacturing systems engineering, industrial automation or mechatronics; electronic, electrical, or electrical and electronic engineering; civil engineering; environmental science geography and GIS Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.
