Tackling low pay in the UK is the theme of an open seminar at the University of Greenwich on Wednesday 25 January.

Several experts will be speaking on this topic, in an event organised by the university's Work and Employment Research Unit (WERU), part of its Business School.

Subjects include the impact of the National Living Wage, introduced by then Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne in 2016, and the ways in which low pay can be tackled in both a statutory and voluntary capacity.

Speakers include Sian Moore, Professor of Employment Relations and Human Resource Management at Greenwich, and Director of WERU; Ken Mulkearn, a founder of Incomes Data Research; Katherine Chapman, Director, Living Wage Foundation; and David Nash and Deborah Hann, from the University of Cardiff.

Professor Moore will explore the impact that the National Living Wage may have on workers on non-standard employment contracts, in the context of the increase in zero hours, variable hours, guaranteed hours contracts and 'misclassified self-employment'. Her research looks at the relationship between gender, class, consciousness and activism, and she has also published on statutory trade union recognition and the British Airways dispute.

Ken Mulkearn will present on the findings from a survey of employers, carried out by the Low Pay Commission, about the implementation of the National Living Wage. This survey looked at its effects, now and in future, on pay and conditions, work and productivity, and on costs, profits and prices. Ken has vast experience of speaking to a wide range of audiences on pay issues.

Katherine Chapman's presentation will provide an overview of the Living Wage Foundation, and the reported benefits of the Living Wage for employees and businesses. She has a background in working with industry leaders and policy makers to achieve change. Her previous roles include Assistant Director at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, where she led on strategies to boost productivity, wages and social mobility, and Head of Education and Skills at Policy Connect, a cross-party network of industry leaders and parliamentarians.

David Nash, Lecturer in Employment Relations at Cardiff Business School, specialises in the areas of remuneration, corporate governance and workplace conflict resolution. Deborah Hann, a Lecturer in Employment Relations and a researcher in UK and European Employment Relations at Cardiff Business School, has investigated the impact of European legislation on workers, and the resolution of conflict in the workplace.

Tackling Low Pay: Minimum Wage or Living Wage? takes place between 3pm and 6pm in Room QA238, Queen Anne Court, Greenwich Campus.
