Does it pay to work in the public sector? Public sector pay and industrial relations during the Coalition and Conservative governments come under scrutiny in a public seminar at the University of Greenwich next Wednesday (27 April).

Several experts will be sharing their views, in an event organised by the university's Work and Employment Research Unit, part of its renowned Business School. All are welcome, with details of how to register below.

Geoffrey K.White, the university's Professor of Human Resource Management, says: "Public sector pay has been constrained under a strict pay policy since 2010 and there have also been changes to payment systems and proposals for changes to working practices. Some changes have been imposed, some have been negotiated and others have been kicked into the long grass.

"This seminar will seek to focus on what has changed and what has not. We will consider the emergence of skill shortages, the growth of agency working and changes to pay progression. We'll look, too, at the state of the Pay Review Body system and collective bargaining. The landscape of pay and industrial relations in the public sector has changed dramatically since 2010, but an assessment of the outcome so far is long overdue."

Speakers include Nicola Allison, from the Office for Manpower Economics, who will address the main issues facing the pay review bodies in the light of the ongoing one per cent public sector pay policy.

Josie Irwin, Head of Employment Relations for the Royal College of Nursing, will take stock of developments in NHS pay and terms and conditions since the economic crash in 2008. Heather Wakefield, Head of the Local Government, Police and Justice section at Unison, will cover the impact of austerity policies on the local government workforce.

David Powell, of the National Union of Teachers, will speak on the 'real picture' on teachers' pay; and Alastair Hatchett, a Visiting Research Fellow from the university's Business School, will provide an overview of policy and outcomes. He was previously Head of Pay at the major pay research organisation, Incomes Data Services.
