Medway BookA new book looking at the development of the Medway Towns between 1550 and 1914 area is being launched at the University of Greenwich this evening (Thursday 20 June).

The Medway Towns: river, docks and urban life (2013), by Dr Sandra Dunster, Programme Leader for History at the university, is the result of a Heritage Lottery Fund project which saw universities around the country produce a series of accessible but academically sound local history books.

Working with Victoria County History, founded in 1899 to produce a history of the English counties and since 1932 part of the Institute for Historical Research, each project was written up by an academic researcher working with volunteers from the community.

Dr Dunster says: “The book launch brings the project to a close and celebrates the achievements of the volunteers from the Medway area, each of whom will be presented with a copy of the book. I’d also like to thank the people from local history organisations who made a financial contribution to the project.”

The launch takes place at 7pm in the Pilkington Building on the Maritime Campus, Central Avenue, Kent ME4 4TB. If you would like to attend please email
