Issues in Second Language TeachingA new textbook aimed at helping language teachers enhance their skills has been written by a University of Greenwich professor.

Issues in Second Language Teaching, by Alessandro Benati, deals with both the theoretical and practical sides of how languages are taught in the classroom. It reflects on the research that has been carried out in learning a new language, and deals with a host of practical issues such as teaching grammar, correcting errors, providing ‘good’ input, developing output activities and encouraging interaction between learners.

Alessandro Benati is the university’s Professor of Applied Linguistics & Second Language Studies, within its Faculty of Architecture, Computing & Humanities, and a leading expert in the way that people learn a language.

He says: “I wrote the book to help teachers, including trainees and those who are more experienced, to reflect on certain topics and key issues related to second language teaching.

“Despite the proliferation of books and courses in language teaching methodologies, many fail to emphasise the crucial interplay between how people learn languages and what it is the most effective way to teach. My hope is that my new book will prove a key publication in this field.”

The book has drawn high praise from reviewers. Pedro Guijarro-Fuentes, Associate Professor in Spanish at the University of Plymouth, wrote: “It is a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students and anyone interested in language teaching and language acquisition, with a particular reference to input and processing.”

Professor Benati has published widely on the subject of language learning and teaching, and has led a prestigious education project in the Republic of Macedonia, backed by the British Council, to improve the skills and effectiveness of language teachers.

Issues in Second Language Teaching is published by Equinox Books and is priced at £55 (hardback) and £16.99 (paperback):
