University team scoops top European Pharmacy prize

A1854-University-team-scoops-top-European-Pharmacy-prizeA University of Greenwich project raising higher education standards in Europe for people deciding which drugs should be available for distribution has gained a top accolade from the European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy.

Dr Milan D Antonijevic, a senior lecturer in pharmaceutical analysis at the University of Greenwich School of Science, at Chatham Maritime, was delighted when his team’s project poster presentation took top honours at the association’s conference in Catania, Sicily.

The poster presentation was selected as the best out of 35 submissions because it addressed key themes being pursued by the European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy – bringing different countries and different academic disciplines together and taking an innovative approach to raising standards in pharmaceuticals education.

The international team is working to consolidate and develop standards of education in Europe for pharmacists and other qualified people who will be responsible for approving drugs for the marketplace.

Backed by Tempus IV funding from the European Commission, the team also includes representatives from Trinity College, Dublin, the University of Belgrade, Serbia, the University of Ljubljana and the Institute for Business, Excellence and Innovation in Slovenia.

Dr Antonijevic said: “We have also been working with Serbian government health experts and their Drug Agency, Pharmaceutical Chamber and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group Council.

“Together we are developing approaches that will standardise best practice and ensure compatibility of training and how to deliver it for people responsible for approving medicines, particularly for postgraduate courses and qualifications.

“For example, it is now recognised that people taking major decision on quality assurance of medicines should have a detailed understanding of not only the science behind drugs but also the processes of drug formulation and manufacturing.

“We are currently in the process of agreeing the key content of higher education courses in this field and how best it can be delivered.”
