In the disability access questionnaire and again during the online registration process students will be asked to consider if the university’s general arrangements will adequately address their needs. If not they will be invited to discuss a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).
In cases where a PEEP may be needed the student will meet with a member of the Disability & Dyslexia Centre who will make an initial assessment as to what evacuation arrangements may be required.Where students have met with an adviser but a PEEP has not been arranged information about how the student will manage their own evacuation will be recorded in DIS (the Disability & Dyslexia Centre Database).
In cases where a student does requires a PEEP the Disability & Dyslexia Centre will advise the Health & Safety Unit who will invite the student to a meeting to discuss this. The Health & Safety Unit will liaise with the relevant programme leader, Disability Named Contact, Facilities Management and the Disability & Dyslexia Centre if necessary.
Orientation trips may l need to be carried out with the student and their helper (if they have one) and relevant members of staff in all the buildings they will be using. This may need to be done each year as timetables change. Schools are responsible for notifying the Disability & Dyslexia Centre and the Health & Safety Unit of these changes. The Disability & Dyslexia Centre will organise new orientation sessions where appropriate taking guidance from Facilities Management.
A copy of the PEEP will be given to the student, helper, relevant members of teaching staff, Disability & Dyslexia Centre and Facilities Management.
It is the responsibility of the student to inform the university (via the Disability & Dyslexia Centre) of any changes in their condition which may require adjustments to their PEEP.
