  • Evacuation procedures

Evacuation procedures

General procedures for evacuation

The specific procedures for evacuation will differ according to the building and campus. However this is the general procedure throughout the university:

  • a fire alarm will sound to indicate that all people must evacuate the building
  • individuals should exit in an orderly fashion using the nearest evacuation route and go straight to the relevant Assembly Point for that building
  • all belongings should be left behind so that the building can be evacuated as quickly as possible

Specific proecedures for evacuation of disabled students

The university considers the following issues when planning for the emergency evacuation of disabled students:

  • the location and numbers of disabled students in a building, including information on course activities and timetabling
  • the characteristics and facilities of the building, for example lifts, refuges, alarm systems
  • the needs of disabled students that are not adequately addressed by the general evacuation arrangements, or by existing individual provision such as guide dogs or carers
  • actions that are needed when it is not possible to evacuate disabled people, e.g. access to refuges
  • the availability of trained staff to deal with emergency evacuations, for example evacuation equipment
