Planning for your support needs

Before you apply

If you have  a disability, specific learning difficulty or long term medical condition  you should begin to think about and plan for your support at least one year before you intend to start your course. For most students this will involve applying for Disabled Students’ Allowances. Those who have personal care needs, or on going medical or mental health care needs will need to liaise with their local social services or medical/mental health services to ensure continuity of care. These needs will apply whichever university you attend and you should not delay making the necessary applications and arrangements until you have a confirmed place.

If you need advice on these arrangements you are invited to contact the Disability Centre at any time in the application process . You are also advised to attend one of the university Open Days.

When you have an offer of a place

Prospective students with disabilities

Once you have  accepted and confirmed your offer of a place, it will assist the Disability & Dyslexia Centre to  plan for your projected support needs  when you arrive if you can complete and return a disability questionnaire.

If you have not already done this please complete our disability support assessment form below. You can do this online, or you can use one of the alternative formats to download and either e-mail or post your completed application. If you are unable to access any of the formats offered please contact the Disability & Dyslexia Centre.

Please note: if you are completing the online application form, you may be sent a checklist of any documents you will need to post separately as evidence of your disability or difficulty. These may include:

  • letter of confirmation of Disabled Students' Allowances from your funding authority
  • copy of your Assessment of Needs report

Prospective students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties

There is no need for dyslexic students to complete the questionnaire, although you should also apply for DSAs in advance of starting the course and make an appointment to see an adviser once registered on their course.
