Assessment of needs
An assessment of needs is a meeting between a student and an assessor qualified to identify the equipment and support that students with disabilities/specific learning difficulties need to study successfully at university.
Initial assessment of needs meeting
At an assessment of needs meeting, individual needs and the demands of the course are discussed. Where students are recommended mentoring or study skills support, the assessment forms the basis on which student and tutor/mentor agree key study strategies for getting the most out of the course.
What happens after the assessment of needs meeting
- Agreement of equipment and support
At the end of the assessment the assessor will aim to agree with you all the equipment and support you will need for your studies.
- Written report of recommendations
The assessor will subsequently produce a written report of all the recommendations and if you request it a draft copy will be sent to you to check that the information is correct.
- Consideration by funding authority
A final copy then goes to both you and the funding authority. The funding authority considers the report and its recommendations in the light of the evidence and works out the support which can be funded from the Disabled Students’ Allowances.
- Decision and notification by funding authority
The funding authority will contact you confirming which recommendations they will agree to, and how to go about obtaining equipment and organising any other support recommended.
- Make an appointment with your campus Disability & Dyslexia Centre
When you receive the final copy of your report we advise that you book an appointment with a Disability or Dyslexia Adviser at your campus. This is especially important if you need to discuss arrangements for your exams or you need to organise a support worker or study skills tutor/mentor.
