These programmes are generally funded by the NHS. Most degree and diploma students are eligible for a bursary which is applied for through the NHS Business Authority and Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) are available as part of the bursary. When you receive your bursary pack it will include details about how to apply for DSAs.
You should send this form, together with evidence of your disability to the NHS. They will not consider your application for DSAs until they have received your bursary application form. The evidence you provide will need to be recent and demonstrate how your disability or specific learning disability will affect your studies.
If you have been seconded by your employer to do an NHS funded programme of study, the NHS will not be responsible for your DSAs. However, you may still be able to apply for the DSAs from Student Finance England. When you contact them to request an application for DSAs you should explain that you are a seconded student, and that you are not eligible for the DSAs through the NHS bursary scheme.
If you intend to apply for a maintenance loan from SFE you should complete form PN1 making sure that you remember to tick the box on the first page saying you want to apply for DSAs. A second form (DSA1 – short version) will be sent to you. You must return this with a copy of your medical or diagnostic evidence. If you do not intend to apply for a maintenance loan you should fill out the long version of DSA1 and sent that with a copy of your medical or diagnostic evidence. In both cases, in addition to the evidence, you will need to send a copy of your letter of secondment.
