If for any reason you are repeating your first year or part of your programme this academic year, be smart and join SMART (Student Mentoring And Retention Team). Support is available, including study skills sessions, mentoring, life coaching & counselling.
If you are having personal or family problems and you need to speak to someone about it, do not suffer in silence. You can make an appointment to see a counsellor on your campus of study by making an appointment on 020 8331 9444. You may also contact a key member of staff in every school who are trained to listen to your problems and to give you advice. They are called Listening Ears. You may also wish to speak to one of our chaplains who will be happy to offer crisis and ongoing pastoral support.
You can see a study skills adviser on any campus of study and they can help you with basic English and essay writing skills, maths support, research techniques, time management and much more. Workshops are held regularly. Contact the Study Skills team by e-mailing study-skills@gre.ac.uk.
Find out about courses specific to your situation and learning style, and build the confidence and self-awareness to succeed in your academic work.
If you are worried about your finances, one of our student finance advisers (located in your campus Student Centre) will be happy to offer you advice on budgeting, financial support available including the Access to Learning Fund and a number of other grants/bursaries.
The Guidance & Employability Team (GET) will be happy to offer you advice on how to write a good CV and improve your interviewing skills. You may find a part-time job through the JobShop or volunteer to work in an organisation of your choice and build up your work experience.
If you have a disability that is seen or unseen, you may make an appointment to see one of our disability or dyslexia advisers. They can also help you to apply for the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) and arrange for Assessments of Need through the university Maritime Assessment Centre.
