Atkins essay competition

Undergraduate students from the Schools of Architecture & Construction and Engineering are being offered the chance to win a work-shadowing opportunity with Atkins, the UK's largest engineering design consultancy providing multidisciplinary technical expertise.

As one of the world’s leading engineering and design consultancies Atkins offers unparalleled opportunities for talented individuals in search of a rewarding career.

Students are invited to submit an essay (200-500 words) answering the following question:

'Tell me about a time when you volunteered for a challenging project/task/assignment.'

Prizes

  • All shortlisted students will be invited to deliver a presentation at Atkins Head Office followed by a networking event where you will meet graduates working in relevant sectors.
  • A student from each year group (Year 1, 2 and 3) will win a day of work shadowing.

Tips for success

  • Do your research! Look at the Atkins graduate career web pages What kind of graduate skills and qualities do you think they look for?
  • Write down a list of possible examples you could use to answer the question, pick an example that will allow you to describe various relevant skills and attributes when answering the question.
  • Think about the structure of your essay and make sure you answer the question fully: you could use the STAR technique*.

    * STAR stands for Situation, Tasks, Action, Result - when you write your essay the emphasis should be on the action you took and the results of your actions.

To submit your essay e-mail it to get@gre.ac.uk with the subject heading ‘Atkins Essay Competition 2012’

Deadline

Essays need to be submitted by 5pm, Friday 10 February 2012. *
