Activities and required commitment

Commitments

Each student on the scheme must be prepared to carry out the following actions:

  • To complete the student application form for the scheme.
  • To attend an orientation session for the scheme.
  • To attend an induction session for the scheme.
  • To attend an introductory meeting with the mentor in early-November.
  • To spend 2 hours each month in contact with the mentor, communicating via e-mail or telephone and meeting face-to-face. This time commitment does not include travel time to mentoring meetings.
  • To spend time planning and preparing for each mentoring meeting and communication, and working towards achieving the agreed tasks and goals in between meetings.
  • To complete a mid-scheme review .
  • To respond promptly to communications from the scheme co-ordinator at the University of Greenwich.
  • To attend the GET Volunteering and Mentoring Achievement Ceremony in May/June at the end of the scheme.
  • To complete an end of scheme review.

Expenses

This is a voluntary scheme for both mentors and mentees, with all university support being provided free of charge. Mentors and mentees are however expected to pay for their own out-of-pocket expenses that may be incurred through their participation. Ideally, mentoring meetings are held at the mentor’s place of work, so no significant travel or other costs should be incurred by the mentor. Student mentees are expected to pay for their own travel and subsistence expenses associated with their participation in the mentoring scheme.
