The GET Mentoring Scheme helps University of Greenwich students to plan and prepare for graduate employment by organising matches with experienced professionals who offer career-focused support.
Mentoring is a one-to-one, non-judgemental relationship in which a more experienced individual (the ‘mentor’) voluntarily gives time to another individual who can benefit from their support (the ‘mentee’). A mentor can be defined as 'someone who helps others to achieve their potential'.
The aim is for the student mentee to learn from the professional experiences of their mentor, gaining first-hand insights into graduate careers and professional life. The role of the mentor is to meet and communicate with their student mentee, to gain an understanding of their situation and to provide encouragement and motivation for the student to set and achieve career-focused goals.
Mentoring meetings and activities aim to build student confidence within a professional environment, to develop employability skills and to prepare the student for a successful transition to graduate-level employment. Mentors do not offer employment opportunities or work experience: they offer a listening ear, their professional experience and feedback on the career-focused actions that their student mentee takes.
