The Materials Science Research Group’s Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL), which is accredited to ISO 17025, provides the business community with access to scientific resources within the University of Greenwich, including modern equipment in well-appointed facilities.

It offers industry partners offering a wide range of services including routine chemical analysis, all forms of molecular spectroscopy, liquid and gas chromatography, physical testing and specialist scientific consultancy.

The group is also home to a university spin-out company Carbon8, which is able to provide Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) for the treatment of industrial waste and contaminated soils. ACT offers a unique combination of benefits, including the use of carbon dioxide to produce materials that can be re-used (or disposed of more cheaply), and with significantly shorter treatment times than traditional methods.

A major focus of the group’s work is remediation of contaminated environments. This work has led to a series of worldwide collaborations with scientists in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Industrial collaborations

The ASL and Carbon8 have a range of industrial clients including BP, Holton Borough Council, Land Securities, Cleanaway, Lafarge, Gallagher, EoN and the Buckingham Group. Other industrial partners have included Shell Global Solutions, National Grid and CL:AIRE.

The group also has long-standing research collaboration with the Jordanian Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company based in Amman, Jordan.
