Bursaries for budding scientists in Medway and Kent

Dr Nichola ColemanLocal sixth formers with ambitions for a career in science are invited to apply for a bursary from the Nuffield Foundation to carry out research projects at the University of Greenwich at Medway next summer.

This year nine students from schools in Medway, Maidstone and Tonbridge were each awarded £80 per week for four to six weeks, to experiment with novel formulations of polymers and proteins in the School of Science.

Dr Nichola Coleman, Senior Lecturer in Materials Chemistry at the University of Greenwich, who coordinated the projects, comments: “The Nuffield students were outstanding. We were very impressed by the quality of their research and we welcome future applications from our local schools.”

The Nuffield Foundation also provided Andrew Hurt, a second year BSc Chemistry student at the University of Greenwich, with an undergraduate bursary to carry out research on nanoparticles for tissue engineering. Andrew says: “During my project I learned that certain materials can stimulate the body’s ability to repair its own bone tissue. These are biodegradable so they leave the body after they have begun their work. I’ve now begun to develop a scaffold for bone tissue cells to grow and hope to continue this research for a PhD.”

Teachers can find out more details about taking part in next year’s scheme by contacting Dr Nichola Coleman in the School of Science, University of Greenwich at Medway, at N.Coleman@gre.ac.uk

Schools can apply on behalf of their Year 12 students for next year’s science bursaries via the Nuffield Foundation website: http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/science-bursaries-schools-and-colleges
