Student experience

The Greenwich Maritime Institute prides itself on its vibrant academic environment and the personal attention it offers students. Teaching is in small groups and students have a personal tutor to guide them through their degree programme.

All our staff are specialists in maritime-related fields.

We have an international student body from a variety of different career backgrounds. Currently we have students from Angola, Brazil, China, Estonia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Iran, Japan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Malaysia, Surinam, Tanzania, Turkey and the UK.
This results in a friendly and eclectic mix of people.

Among those who have studied for higher degrees at Greenwich Maritime Institute are Master Mariners, ship managers and officers, marine surveyors, maritime administrators, government representatives, trade union officials and maritime educators.

What all of the GMI students share is an enthusiasm for the sea in the past, present and future.

"The programme examines everything to do with Maritime History but is so relevant to modern times. The tutors are excellent and always accessible."

Georgia Balta
MA Maritime History

"Coming from a professional background as a deck officer in the Royal Navy, academic life is quite different. The groups are small and very friendly and help and advice is always available. People who come in to talk to us have lots of experience within the industry. London is a major centre in the world’s maritime industry and Greenwich is at the heart of it. This is very evident when working in the GMI."
