GMI undertakes research and consultancy for business, government and enterprise. 'Women in Fisheries' is a good example of a research project undertaken by the Institute. The project was funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the European Commission (EC).
The research focused on the key roles played by the women involved in fisheries providing independent evidence which contributed to policy making. The project culminated in a major research report submitted to Defra, and three academic papers for publication in 2012. The success of this project supported a key GMI/School of Science bid for a 2.3 million Euro grant and a decision from the funding body is currently pending.
GMI is also working with the School of Science, the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), external partners – including Lloyd’s Register, Aquafuel and the Kent Science Park – and partners in Greece and Germany on a suite of projects to develop glycerol as a clean, renewable marine fuel of the future.
