Most of Professor Roger Knight’s career was spent in the National Maritime Museum, where he was in charge of the manuscripts and library, after which he had a prolonged spell running the museum’s computer cataloguing. After 27 years, Professor Knight left the Museum in 2000 as Deputy Director. He was then appointed as a visiting professor of naval history at the Greenwich Maritime Institute (GMI). For the period of a three-year Leverhulme award, 2006-09, he was employed as a part-time member of staff, before reverting to ‘visiting’ status.

Research/scholarly interests

  • 18th and early 19th century British political, social and naval history, especially the Napoleonic Wars.
