'Lost generation' is subject of university seminar

Professor Patrick AinleyHow young people are faring in the recession is the theme of a free seminar taking place at the University of Greenwich on Wednesday, 11 January.

The event features talks by Patrick Ainley, Professor of Education & Training at Greenwich, and Dr Martin Allen, an NUT activist and part-time teacher.

Professor Ainley says: “Against a background of inner city riots and student demonstrations, the presentation will examine whether the ‘lost generation’ is able to find its way. Record numbers are without work, while many more have either given up searching or have withdrawn from the labour market, hiding out in the hope that things can only improve.

“Increasing numbers of people, particularly graduates, are finding they are overqualified, underemployed and stuck in jobs that fall well short of their expectations. Schools, colleges and universities will continue to lose legitimacy, as a generation considers it has been short changed.”

Professor Ainley and Dr Allen have written extensively on education, teaching and youth unemployment. The pair co-authored the book Lost Generation? New Strategies For Youth and Education (2010, Continuum Books) and have also written a series of e-booklets featured on their joint blog at http://radicaled.wordpress.com

All are welcome to attend the seminar, titled Young People and the Economic Crisis, which takes place between 5pm and 7pm in King William Court, Room 002, Greenwich Campus. Part of the Big Picture seminar series run by the university’s Business School, the seminar will be of particular interest to anyone interested in, or studying, economics, politics, international business, employment law and human resources.

Professor Ainley was recently elected as a Fellow of the Society for Research into Higher Education, in recognition of his contribution to higher education research.
