  • A1755 - Kathleen Scholarship

Five Greenwich trainee teachers receive first scholarships

A1755-Kathleen-ScholarshipFive students from the University of Greenwich’s School of Education & Training have been chosen as the first to receive the Kathleen Jones Scholarship. This was made possible by a generous personal gift of £100,000 by the late Mrs Kathleen Jones, a former principal of Avery Hill College, one of the institutions that came together to form the University of Greenwich.

It provides assistance of £2,000 per year to students in the School who require help to pay for tuition, accommodation and study materials. The recipients who are studying Primary Education, Childhood Studies and Physical Education & Sport degrees, were Dionne Paul, Michael Smith, Stephanie Moore, Elaine Fairclough and Michelle McDonald.

Mrs Jones was principal of Avery Hill Training College in Eltham from 1960 until 1981. The college, which is now part of the university, specialised in teacher training and was based on the campus sites either side of Avery Hill Park.

Kathleen Jones asked for her gift to fund scholarships for students studying education and training, to help them with fees and living costs. The donation is one of the largest ever made by an individual to the university. The government will boost its value by a further £50,000 through a matched funding initiative.

Chris Philpott, Head of the School of Education & Training at the University of Greenwich, made the traditional eulogy of praise and says: “The Kathleen Jones scholarships will make a real difference to the students who receive them. Here in the School of Education & Training we are continuing her mission to uphold the highest standards, building on the 100 year history in teacher training at Avery Hill. ”

Physical Education & Sport student Stephanie Moore says: “I have to work to support my studies. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to reduce my weekly working hours from 24 to 12. Now I’m in my second year, my grades contribute towards the final degree, so it’s important to have time to research and prepare properly.”

Mark Hainy, Head of Development & Alumni at the University of Greenwich, says: “We are truly grateful both for the commitment that Kathleen made to Avery Hill College and for her donation of an inspirational gift that will continue to change lives at the University of Greenwich.”
