Department of Education & Community Studies

Programmes

The department offers a range of degrees for people who wish to work with children aged 0–18 years in education and related areas.

Our education studies and childhood studies programmes can be used towards an application for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at postgraduate (PGCE) level in primary teaching, which is offered in the School.

We also have programmes for people who want to work in early years and youth and community settings, and foundation degrees in education and community studies for people who are already in employment.

Links

The department has many close links with professional bodies within the National Children’s Bureau, Play England National Youth Agency and partner colleges in the region. We also have links with colleges in Malaysia through our early years programme.

We also maintain close links with our community through joint programmes and work placements.

Research

The department is home to two research centres – Play & Recreation and Outdoor Education & Natural Learning. These centres deliver seminars and events during the academic year.

Many members of the department are recognised leaders in their field and have published in reputable and practitioner journals. The research interests of the department cover:

  • Social history of education
  • Special needs
  • Natural learning
  • Child psychology
  • Nursery education.
