Make your business greener and more efficient

A1846-Green-Up-event-electric-vansThe University of Greenwich is hosting a free event to help local and regional businesses discover how they can become greener and save money. The “Green Up – Profit Through Efficiency” event, organised in partnership with the South East London Chamber of Commerce and South East Enterprise, is being held at the Greenwich campus on the evening of Tuesday, July 13 from 5pm to 9pm.

The main speakers will be James Cleverly, Chairman of the London Waste & Recycling Board, and Neil Johnston, Director of the Institute for Sustainability. The welcome speech will be made by the university’s Professor Tom Barnes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise).

Businesses will also have the opportunity to win £3,000 worth of support from Knowledge Connect to work on their own ‘Go Green’ project with the University of Greenwich.

Representatives from the University of Greenwich’s School of Architecture, Design & Construction and Business School will be talking about the knowledge and expertise they can offer in the area. There will also be exhibition stands by partners including South East Enterprise, South East London Chamber of Commerce, Greenwich Council, British Library, WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), Knowledge Connect, the Institute for Sustainability and London Waste & Recycling Board.

Dr Martin Davies, Director of Research & Enterprise at the university, says: “The University of Greenwich, which is carrying out leading edge research on sustainability and new environmental technologies, is delighted to have organised this event in partnership with local business support agencies. Those attending will learn about the wide range of advice, guidance and funding available to help their business go green.”

The University of Greenwich rose 42 places in the People & Planet Green League 2010. Greenwich has joined the Carbon Trust's Higher Education Carbon Management Programme which aims to reduce carbon emissions for the next five years and beyond. The university is installing automatic energy meter readers to enable the measurement and monitoring of energy usage and target reductions. It has also been granted a Salix Fund interest free loan to install voltage optimisation equipment and improve insulation.

On the academic side the University of Greenwich’s Centre for Sustainability provides a university wide focus for environmental and sustainability issues. Academic staff are working on projects such as how buildings and cars could be fuelled from energy extracted from water on their windows and other surfaces.
