Athina Piterou’s PhD research was linked to the ESRC project dematerialising the printed paper text (Sustainable Technologies Programme). It addressed the emergence of the e-book, considering how information technology applications could alleviate the environmental effects of print. Athina is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Policy Studies Institute (PSI), University of Westminster, where she was involved in mapping interactions between participant organisations in the Sustainable Development Research Network.

Research/scholarly interests

  • Relationship between innovation and environmental sustainability
  • Socio-technical transitions area using insights from science and technology studies
    • Socio-technical change is examined from a relational perspective focusing on the long-term transformation of systems that address societal needs
  • Relationships between stakeholders, technical artefacts and embedded practices are taken into account
  • A further area of interest is the application of social network methodology to the mapping of scientific networks.
