Equality and the University of Greenwich

The Equality Act received royal assent in April 2010 and consolidates and streamlines current anti-discrimination legislation. The Equality Act requires that we carry out evidence based equality planning and we have chosen to do this via a framework including an Equality Strategy and Action Plan.

The University of Greenwich recognises that people cannot be pigeonholed into different diversity strands. We know that our communities and the people in them have complex identities and needs and we have chosen to structure our Equality Strategy according to university functions, rather than equality strands.

This will allow us to identify where issues affect different groups of people and find holistic solutions. We also believe that an action plan that is structured around functions will lead to strong ownership of the equalities agenda and will pave the way for integrated equalities work in the future.

This Equality Strategy provides an integrated structure arising from the following documents:

  • Race Equality Scheme (2006, reviewed 2008)
  • Disability Equality Scheme (2007, reviewed 2009)
  • Gender Equality Scheme (2007)
  • Age Equality Policy (2007)
  • Equal Opportunities Policy (2006)

The equality framework contains:

  • Equality and Diversity Policy Statement
  • Equality Strategy
  • How the Equality Strategy links to institutional policy, procedures and data
  • A university-wide framework for equality
  • Equality Action Plan
  • University of Greenwich context
  • Annual Equality Statistical Digest
