New Master's degrees have been launched by Greenwich's Faculty of Engineering & Science to meet growing demands for highly qualified, specialist engineers.
Students taking the MSc in Future Intelligent Technologies will work at the frontline of the expanding and developing 'Internet of Things' – taking a pioneering approach to analysing and predicting the innovative ways future smart devices will be designed and will communicate with each other.
"This programme is truly forward-thinking," says Professor Simeon Keates, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor. "It will give our students a head start in facing the technological and engineering challenges of the future.
"At last we have the technologies, vast computer power available in small units and durable, powerful batteries to make the Internet of Things – at home and in the workplace – a reality.
"The era of smart devices, robotics and cybernetics is taking off. Currently South Korea and Japan are leading the field. Our students will be qualified to help the UK become a major player, and hopefully a leader, in this rapidly developing engineering arena."
The university has invested more than £1 million in integrated engineering laboratories at its Medway Campus, including a robotics suite, to provide the right environment for students to research and experiment with future technologies and the systems that will support them.
Successful applicants for the faculty's new MSc in Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering will develop the type of skills and knowledge now in short supply across the developing world, as well as in the UK.
The programme brings together science and engineering to analyse and resolve complex environmental problems in the handling of water and waste on an industrial scale.
Professor Keates adds: "Traditionally these challenges were called 'public health engineering'. Today it is accepted that we need a much wider approach, with more environmental sensitivity. We need to have a greater emphasis on consideration and successful management of the earth's resources.
"This programme takes pioneering eco-friendly approaches to engineering water and waste-management systems with a global perspective. This means our students will be welcomed to take these concepts forward in both private and public organisations at home and overseas."
