The £5 million Student Hub at Medway opens in style this month with an exciting programme of activities for students.
The universities of Kent and Greenwich have worked in partnership to transform a listed building, once the site of a swimming pool and skittles alley, into a vibrant, state-of-the-art student centre for all at the shared Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime.
Set across two levels, the Student Hub features an all-new, high quality café/bar, The Deep End, as well as large, open-plan spaces for a range of social events and entertainment. It includes a cinema-style big screen for movie nights, while students can also enjoy the latest big football and rugby matches on Sky Sports, available on one of the Hub's ultra-modern flatscreen TVs.
Medway students can enjoy a wide range of activities in the Student Hub each day from Monday 16 January, with events ranging from parties to live music nights, and from quizzes to big film screenings.
Tasty free samples of burgers, curries and more are being served up from 7pm on the first day of opening (Monday 16 January). The next night sees the start of live music nights on Tuesdays, with three bands taking to the Hub's brand new stage for the first time. This will also be the first chance for students to experience the high-quality sound systems, and atmospheric lighting, for themselves.
A 'ball pool' and cocktail party follow, with the highlight of the week taking place when rapper Tinchy Stryder headlines on Friday 20 January. Tickets for this event, which is for Medway students only, will be on sale from GK Unions.
Students can also enjoy a weekly cinema club, as well as quizzes and a Star Wars themed night. A 'Refreshers Fair' takes place on Wednesday 25 January, which will feature a snowboarding simulator, as well as an extensive range of clubs and societies for students to join.
Lesley Ellard, Head of GK Unions, says the Hub will quickly become a popular focal point for the Medway Campus. "We're looking forward to seeing students joining us in the Hub and they have plenty of treats in store with this fantastic new centre," she says. "Whether students fancy some good food, a drink and live music, or prefer to watch sports, chat and socialise, the Hub will have something for everyone."
There are quiet spaces for those wishing to go online or study during the day, and the Hub will also house the offices of GK Unions, the partnership between the Students' Union University of Greenwich (SUUG) and Kent Union.
Students have helped shape the way the building looks, while the Hub will also be offering part-time jobs in its offices, café/bar and kitchen.
GK Unions has over 6,000 members and provides essential services to students from Greenwich and Kent universities on the Medway campus.
