Professor Andrew Lambirth from the University of Greenwich has been appointed Vice President of the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA).
UKLA concentrates on the advancement of education in literacy. It is committed to promoting good practice in the UK and overseas in literacy and language teaching and research.
Andrew Lambirth is Professor of Education and Director of Research & Enterprise in the university’s School of Education and author of the book Poetry Matters. The school is one of the largest teacher training providers in the country, offering courses that cover all phases of education.
He will hold the post from 2011 to 2013. This will be followed in succession by appointments as President Elect, President and Past President. As President Elect in 2014 he expects to be organising the 50th annual conference of the organisation.
The charity contributes to the public debate on literacy. It carries out research and publishes books, a journal, magazine and professional development materials. UKLA also make an annual Children’s Book Award and a biennial Author Award for writing about the teaching of literacy and an exchange scheme with teachers from other European countries.
