New Vice-Chancellor for University of Greenwich: Professor David Maguire

Professor David Maguire

Professor David Maguire has been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, with effect from 1 October 2011. He is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Development) at Birmingham City University and he has a successful track record of senior leadership in the private sector and higher education in both the US and the UK. 

In his new role, David Maguire will lead a university with 2,000 staff, three campuses and a large network of local and international partnerships. Greenwich has 28,000 students and is the top-rated university in London for student satisfaction.

At Birmingham City University, David Maguire is responsible for research and enterprise, and has led major strategic reviews of research, employer engagement and ICT. Previously he was Chief Scientist and Director of Products &  International at Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri Inc.), a global software company based in California.

David holds a doctorate from the University of Bristol and is an acknowledged expert in computer mapping and geographic information systems. He has published seven books and over 100 scientific and technical publications.

He is incisive and analytical and I know that he will help us to achieve our goal of becoming the most successful modern university in London."

David Maguire is married with a grown up daughter. With keen interests in sport and music, he enjoys a regular game of squash and also has been known to play the electric guitar in an amateur rock band.

He succeeds Baroness Blackstone, who is to retire from the university in September, after seven years as Vice-Chancellor.
