The University of Greenwich won the award for ‘Outstanding International Strategy’ at the Times Higher Education Leadership & Management Awards ceremony in London on Thursday, June 19.
During the awards which celebrate leadership, management and business skills in universities and are sponsored by Times Higher Education, Greenwich won the Outstanding International Strategy category. The award was made in particular for the university’s work in India. Greenwich was the UK’s number one recruiter of Indian students last year and it has a deep level of engagement with the country that goes back more than a hundred years.
University researchers are working on 19 sustainable development and agriculture projects in India, including an initiative to cut pesticide use in cotton fields, which involves 100,000 farmers, and the development of a virus resistant tomato. Greenwich’s Centre for Indian Business has launched new MBAs, developed with Indian partners and focussed on the needs of the nation’s economy.
Maureen Skinner, Chair of the Association of University Administrators and a member of the judging panel says: "What distinguished Greenwich in a strong field was the integrated nature of its internationalisation strategy, involving all aspects of the university's work. It also demonstrated the value of focusing on a specific market - India - and developing a holistic approach involving close institutional partnerships."
Professor Simon Jarvis Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) says: “We are delighted to see our international strategy recognised in this way. Our achievement is down to the hard work and innovative teamwork of many staff within our offices and schools including those working in our International Office, the Centre for Indian Business and Natural Resources Institute.”
The University of Greenwich won the Times Higher Education award for Outstanding Engineering Research Team in 2009 and for Innovation & Technology in 2008.
