Two University of Greenwich film students from the School of Humanities have won a worldwide film competition, and the chance to work with one of the UK’s top TV companies.
Fateha Khanam and Icis Lee’s three minute films saw off entries from over 100 students in the competition, set by The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), called See Britain Through My Eyes. Nine Greenwich students were shortlisted.
Fateha’s portrait of her 16-year-old sister, and Icis’s film about her own multi-cultural Korean and British identity earned them the chance to re-make their films with Lion TV, producers of such shows as Britain from Above and Homes under the Hammer. The finished films will be screened by the FCO all over the world to promote Britain in the run up to the 2012 Oylmpics.
Icis says: “I’m from Korea originally but have lived in the UK for seven years. My film deals with how I see London and the UK differently from people who’ve lived here all their lives, and tourists.
“I’m very excited about working with Lion TV. Making the film gave me the chance to prove to myself that I could do it. I want to be a good director - I’ve always felt I could edit and shoot - but without making a film there’s no objective way of seeing if you are any good.”
Mairead McClean, from the university’s Department of Communication and Creative Arts, adds: "Myself and Alia Syed set the students the brief. We’re both practicing film-makers so we wanted to stress the importance of having real deadlines so the students had a taste of what it’s like doing this professionally.
“The FCO were extremely impressed by the diversity of voices and stories from the Greenwich students but Fateha and Icis stood out as being particularly driven. We are all thrilled that so many of our students’ films made the shortlist."
