A Medway School of Pharmacy graduate has been named Tesco’s Pre-Registration Trainee of the Year.
Anthony Samson worked as a trainee pharmacist at Tesco after completing his Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree at Medway in 2008.
The title is competed for each year by pre-registration pharmacists from across the country and recognises the person who has shown the most dedication during the year-long training programme.
Anthony, who lives in Sittingbourne, spent his pre-reg year at the Sheerness, Kent, branch of Tesco. Having sat his end-of-year exams in June, he has continued working with Tesco as a professional pharmacist and is planning to become a cardiovascular specialist in either a community or hospital pharmacy.
Tesco’s Pre-Registration Programme Manager Khilna Shah said the company was proud to name Anthony as the winner. ‘His ambition and drive to succeed were clearly demonstrated during the year. He has shown true dedication and commitment, along with a very good understanding of community pharmacy in Tesco – not only for now, but for the future too,’ she said.
Anthony was among the first cohort of MPharm students who enrolled at Medway School of Pharmacy in 2004, and said his tutors had played a huge part in his success. ‘They were simply the most supportive people I have ever worked with. I think of the students and staff at Medway as a big family – everyone banded together to make the School a success,’ he said.
‘The help, guidance and personal support I received during my degree laid the foundations for my career.’
Both the award and the ceremony, where Anthony received his trophy, were sponsored by Reckitt Benckiser.
Tesco’s award completes a year of accolades for the School, which is run jointly by the universities of Kent and Greenwich, and based at the institutions’ shared Chatham Maritime campus. Earlier this year the School topped the table of higher education institutions in the National Student Survey, when students rated their education as the very best in the country.
Previously, Medway School of Pharmacy student Allison Coll won the British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (BPSA) student of the year competition.
The School opened its doors to its first 80 students in 2004. Today it has more than 550 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate students, and runs a range of degree programmes for healthcare professionals.
