Britain's most senior legal figure, the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, was one of three inspiring role models to speak to law students at the University of Greenwich as part of their Legal Skills Week, which started on Monday. Over 150 aspiring legal eagles had the chance to hear her speak about her life and career and to encourage them to aim high.
She said: “As Attorney General, I have a profound interest in the development of young people in our society - they are our greatest asset. Raising aspirations is a theme I wholeheartedly endorse and I hope that through all the events during the week the students will see that barriers faced can also become opportunities to evoke positive change. There are no limits and so many possibilities and I’ll be watching the careers of the young people here with interest. I wish them every success.”
Sir Alan Sugar's advisor in BBC-1's The Apprentice, Margaret Mountford, who is a trained lawyer, also took part in the university's special week of events for undergraduate law students. She said: "In these economic times it is increasingly important that students leave university not just with a good degree but well-equipped for the world of work. Skills Week plays a significant role in raising students' aspirations and in developing an understanding of the skills which they need, and how to present themselves and the skills which they have to prospective employers."
The theme of the week was Raising Aspirations and the university's third special speaker also encouraged her audience to aim high. Broadcaster and businesswoman Saira Khan, who was runner-up in the first series of The Apprentice, gave an inspiring talk about the importance of confidence and self-belief.
She also gave practical advice to the students about preparing for the world of work, and getting the job of their dreams.
The university's Sarah Greer, a qualified barrister and Teaching Fellow in Law, explained the thinking behind the week: “Getting graduates into good jobs is a priority for the university. So, each year we take a whole week out of the timetable to focus on the professional skills needed to get ahead at work, giving every law undergraduate the chance to really focus on their career. This year, our guest speakers have been such an inspiration to the students. It's very important for them to be able to see people from all walks of life who have gone on to achieve great success. Our students have been walking round with their heads held high. I know they'll be aiming high in their careers too."
