The seventh annual Thomas Mulquin Memorial Cup, in memory of a student from the University of Greenwich who died while training with the university’s rugby team, was played on Friday November 6.
Thomas was a 20-year-old undergraduate in the second year of a computer science degree when he died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, in 2002.
Two University of Greenwich rugby teams made up of current and past students competed at Blackheath Football Club’s Rectory Field. This year the cup was won by the All Stars team captained by Luis Botsio, the current University of Greenwich Mens 1 XV Captain.
Dan Jones, Vice-President of the Students’ Union at the University of Greenwich, says: “The event is a celebration of Thomas; his family live in various parts of the country and see it as an opportunity to come together to celebrate Thomas' life. The family are touched by the generosity shown by the students who were there that tragic night but also by current students, who did not know Thomas, but demonstrate their comradeship and humility in recognising the importance of the evening.”
All funds raised from the evening, through raffle tickets and a charity auction, were split between The Wooden Spoon Society (The Rugby Football Unions Official Charity) and The Jimmy Mizen Foundation.
