Ninety-two year old Kathleen Jones has donated £100,000 to the University of Greenwich. Mrs Jones was principal of Avery Hill College in Eltham from 1960 until 1981. The college, which is now part of the university, specialised in teacher training and was based on the campus sites either side of Avery Hill Park.
Mrs Jones has asked for her gift to fund scholarships for students studying education and training, to help them with fees and living costs. The donation is one of the largest ever made by an individual to the university. The government will boost its value by a further £92,000 through a new fund to encourage universities to attract donations, as well as the Gift Aid tax relief scheme.
Mark Hainy, Head of Development & Alumni at the University of Greenwich, says: “This is an extraordinarily generous gift from someone who has already given so much to this part of South East London. Mrs Jones continues to have a great passion for education and is delighted that the University of Greenwich is continuing her mission to uphold the highest standards, building on its 100 year history in teacher training.
“Her generous donation will make the lives of students a little easier, and will live on through the next generation of teachers and education professionals.”
