University of Greenwich scientists behind an invention that captures CO2 have been short-listed for the Times Higher Education Awards, the sector’s most prestigious prize.
Dr Colin Hills and Dr Paula Carey have developed a technology which converts contaminated land and industrial waste into harmless pebbles – capturing large amounts of carbon dioxide at the same time.
The two researchers, based in the School of Science at Medway, are nominees in the Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology category. Competition is intense as 130 higher education institutions submit over 500 entries for the awards.
Dr Carey says: “We are thrilled to have our work recognised in this high-profile competition. The company we have formed, Carbon8, is in trials with several industrial partners and the potential of the technology is very exciting.”
If trials are successful, the UK could benefit from 500,000 tonnes of dangerous greenhouse gas CO2 being captured from household waste alone.
The winners will be announced at the Times Higher Education Awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, on 23 October.
