University of Greenwich graduate Toby Buckland takes over as the new main presenter of the UK’s longest-running gardening programme this Friday evening.
Toby qualified in landscape management in 1995, taught at one of the university’s partner institutions, Hadlow College in Kent. He was named as BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World presenter earlier this summer and will appear alongside show regulars Carol Klein and Joe Swift in the main series which returns to the small screen tonight.
After training and working as a rose and pinks nurseryman and gardener, Toby completed a two-year HND in Landscape and Amenity at Hadlow. He went on to work at the Botanic Garden in Cambridge and has since scooped a string of awards for his designs including the gold medal and Best in Show for his Ethical Garden at this year’s Gardeners’ World Live.
Before landing the job at Berryfields, Toby presented and guest presented for a number of gardening programmes (Home Front in the Garden, Real Wrecks, Weed It & Reap) and has also penned columns in the press, as well as three books.
Speaking of his new job, Toby described it as “a complete thrill and honour” and said he was keen to make his own mark on the show.
He added: “For me gardening isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way of life that keeps you in touch with the seasons and creates a constant supply of things to look forward to.”
