Greenwich students star in national web campaign

International student Tutu AiniStudents from the University of Greenwich star in a series of new web videos to encourage others to take up opportunities in higher education.

The university admissions service, UCAS, chose the Greenwich students out of thousands from institutions across the UK to tell the story of their degrees so far. As the new academic year approaches, the videos now appear on-line for a world-wide audience to discover more about life at the university’s three campuses in London and Kent.

Sports-mad Adam Brett, who is about to start his final year, is seen setting the pace on a treadmill at the university’s gym on the Avery Hill campus. He explains the obstacles he faced to study for his BA Hons in Physical Education & Sport:

"When I was a lot younger I was told I wouldn’t pass my GCSEs or even get my A-levels, which I did. Now I’ve managed to get myself to university which is quite an achievement."

The 21-year-old from Watford (now living in New Eltham) also gives tips on how to apply to university and on the support available to students like himself who have dyslexia. Adam works as a student ambassador and hopes to teach in Australia after graduating.

Telling a student story from a different perspective, Susan Hallissey also stars in a video. A mature student at the university’s Greenwich campus, Sue tells of her decision to take the plunge and enrol on the BA Creative Writing course.

"I was really stuck in my life and I was invited along to a project called Open Book for people that don’t usually go to university, from non-traditional backgrounds and they suggested that I take a degree. It frightened the life out of me!"

Rising to the challenge, Sue, 46, describes her course as 'the best thing I ever did' and has had the opportunity to work with directors and actors who bring her writing to life on stage.

Choosing to study for a degree in the UK rather than Nigeria is the story told by a University of Greenwich at Medway student in another video.

International student Tutu Aini, 23, tells of her experiences studying Communications Systems & Software Engineering at the University of Greenwich Medway campus and how she copes away from family and friends.

"Initially I wasn't that enthusiastic about studying abroad but I’ve enjoyed it so far. Besides I can talk to my family whenever I want and I've made so many new friends here that it’s been a great experience."

After performing well academically in her first year, Tutu was presented with a scholarship by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Baroness Blackstone.

Adam, Sue and Tutu feature on the UCAS.tv videos along with five other students. Filming took place on the university’s three campuses in May.
