A second year undergraduate at the University of Greenwich has been named Law Student of the Year 2008 at an awards ceremony in Canary Wharf.
Nooreen Issany, 21, beat ten other hopefuls from universities across the UK to win the Herbert Smith Law Student Award at the National Mentoring Consortium’s 14th annual ceremony.
She picked up her award in front of an audience including former Home Secretary The Rt Hon David Blunkett MP, as well as leading representatives from the worlds of business and law.
Nooreen’s mentor, Thomas Evans from law firm Dewey & LeBeouf, nominated her for the award, stating that her “career focus had impressed me from our very first meeting”. He was also present at the ceremony which took place at Lehman Brothers European Headquarters.
Describing her involvement in the programme, which aims to support students from ethnic minority backgrounds and those with disabilities by arranging one-to-one mentoring partnerships with executives, Nooreen says:
“It is the best thing I’ve done. My mentor, Tom Evans from Dewey & LeBeouf, was a real inspiration and, in him, I saw what I want to achieve in the future. He gave me plenty of advice, not only on my academic studies, but on application and interview techniques which are very useful.”
She adds: “I was really shocked to win the award – and delighted to attend the ceremony after finishing my first exam that morning.”
Nooreen, originally from Mauritius, hopes to pursue a career in commercial law and will spend her summer on placement at two law firms.
Sarah Greer, senior lecturer in Law at the University of Greenwich, says: “Nooreen is an excellent student, who thoroughly deserves this award. We are all very proud of her, and look forward to her continuing success in the years to come."
